THE ABU SAYEED AYYUB ANTHOLOGY
EDITED & COMPILED BY Pushan Ayyub
Abu Sayeed Ayyub's writings on literature, history, philosophy and the sciences constitute one of the most significant contributions to the intellectual tradition of mid- and late-twentieth century Bengal. A testament to the author's wide-ranging interests, the essays in this collection engage multiple disciplines in conversation with each other, ranging from critical assessment of the works of Rabindranath Tagore, to discussions of philosophy and aesthetics, and socio-political analysis and commentary. Compiled and edited by Pushan Ayyub, The Abu Sayeed Ayyub Anthology hopes to introduce the polymath's English oeuvre to a new generation of readers.
To suppose that the whole of our experience is a dream, is to suppose nothing at all; for the question will at once arise as to what is that experience in whose context and in contrast with which this is a dream.
It has been argued in defence of the modern 'overwhelming consciousness of evil' that although superficially we may find consolation in the fact that there is some beauty, joy and even goodness in the world, this consolation vanishes when we compare what is with what could have been. We can think, we can hardly help thinking, of a world which is completely free from disease, suffering, malice and aggression.
