সায়েবসুবোর ভৃত্যবিলাস
 
ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানির আমল। কলকাতার হাওয়ায় তখন নাকি টাকা উড়ছে! বিলেতে সাতপাঁচাপাঁচি জীবন-কাটানো কমবয়সী ব্রিটিশরাও এ-শহরে এসেই রাজার হালে থাকার বদভ্যাস রপ্ত করে ফেলত। সায়েবসুবোদের অন্দরমহলে তখন পঞ্চাশ-ষাট জন খিদমত খাটার লোক, পাত্রভেদে তা একশো-দুশো ছাড়াত! এত আরাম-আয়েসের খরচ তুলতে নেটিভদের তো নাভিশ্বাস! বাংলা যে মন্বন্তরের দিকে এগোবে, তাতে আর আশ্চর্য কী?
 
It was the age of the East India Company. Calcutta, they said, was a city where money flew loose in the wind. Young Britons who had spent their days in England scraping by through penny-pinching lives arrived here and, before long, acquired the taste for princely excess. Inside the sahibs' sprawling households bustled entire battalions of khitmatgars (attendants)-fifty, sixty at a time, and in some cases, well over a hundred. It was the 'natives' who had to break their backs to pay for this pageantry of comfort. So perhaps it was no surprise that Bengal was inching steadily toward a famine.
