Brajendranath Seal VOLUME II
Autobiographical Fragments • Papers on History and Civilisation • Literature • Anthropology • Archives • Life and Works
Edited by Sanjib Mukhopadhyay
The present publication, in two volumes, brings together for the first time a comprehensive selection of the English writings of Sir Brajendranath Seal, covering his outstanding works in the fields of Literature, Philosophy, Mathematics, Religion, Education, Sociology, Linguistics, the Physical and Natural Sciences; with commentaries by experts in the fields; as evidence that goes to substantiate Sir Ashutosh Mookherjee's tribute to Seal at a Special Convocation of Calcutta University in 1921: 'His intellectual attainments are truly encyclopedic in scope and character, and the most powerful microscope would be needed to detect the cultural germ which has successfully escaped his omnivorous instinct.'
The Second Volume brings together fragments of his unfinished autobiography; his papers on History and Civilisation, Anthropology and Literature; his poetry; his annotations for Ben Jonson's Everyman in His Humour; miscellaneous writings; and a substantial bunch of his letters addressed to Rabindranath Tagore, Haraprasad Shastri, P. C. Ray, P. C. Mahalanobis, Jadunath Sinha, William Rothenstein, Edward Thompson, and George Sarton. A final section, contributed by Sanjib Mukhopadhyay, the editor, addresses a few problems over dates, references, texts etc. arising out of the selections; and a comprehensive bibliography of Seal's works and references concerning them.
